The Plantation

While in New Orleans one of the things I had desperately wanted to do was visit the Oak Alley Plantation. I will sheepishly admit, I knew nothing about the plantation..the lives of the slaves or anything…I just loved the look of the front walk with the trees framing the mansion. Now, here’s a little tidbit I didn’t know: The trees are planted in rows like that to funnel the cool air off the Mississippi River through the house when the windows and doors are open. 1700’s central air! Absolutely ingenious. Of course, the girly girl in me is gagging out over the fact that having your doors and windows open all the time means you’re going to have a shit ton of bugs in your house.

The plantation has been in film as well! It was the home where Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt) and Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise) live…killing their slaves and causing a general ruckus in Interview with the Vampire. Now when I was younger (the movie was released in 1994) I loved the movie, the time and place were perfect but I had no idea this was the plantation in the film. We found that out while talking with the tour director at the plantation. I found this blog called Cartoon and Horror that has some screen shots from the movie.

Anyway, I trotted all the way down that walkway and took a series of photographs every 10-ish feet on my trot back to the mansion. This one is about halfway back. The sunlight blinded me a few times so I had to adjust my positioning but I think it turned out well.

I have more photos and facts about the plantation but I’m saving them for later ;)
